One Year Later - July 20, 2006
Well it's been a year now since you left us so unexpectedly, and I can honestly say that life has definitely changed. We could have never have imagined living the rest of our lives without you and not having you with us for all of life’s small and unforgettable moments. But here we are, one year later.
As I sit writing this, your smile and laugh resonate in my mind, as they always do at even a glimpse of your picture or a mention of your name. And as I reflect on the past year of living without you, it is easy to list the generic events and not so generic occurrences that you were not a part of. But none of those would make sense to mention, considering your spirit lives on by our sides during each of them.
What would need mentioning would be important moments that you, through your virtual presence, have been a part of.
One year later – we’ve learned to cherish each other
One year later – we’ve learned respect time
One year later – we’ve learned to work together
One year later – we’ve learned to communicate better
One year later – we’ve learned to ditch the drama
One year later – we’ve learned to value life
One year later – we’ve learned to love
One year later, we’ve learned that some things said in life, make even more sense in death:
“Love is patient, love is kind.
It does not envy, it does not boast.
It is not proud. It is not rude.
It is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered.
It keeps no records of wrongs.
Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with truth.
It always protects, always trusts.
Always hopes, always perseveres.
Love never fails”
One year later, I still beat myself up over not being able to protect you from the evils of this world. But I know in my heart that those evils will perish by their own demise and self-seeking natures.
One year later, we celebrate your short time on this planet. And as we go through the memories that we created together we laugh. We laugh for hours just going through the laundry list of unforgettable generic and not so generic events that you shared with us.
Your legacy lives on.
One year later we still miss you.
One year later we still love you.
One year later we commemorate you.
Love always,
Phil
